When it comes to choosing a motorcycle jacket, there are several key factors to consider. The fit, materials, weather conditions, type of motorcycle, and personal style all play a role in finding the perfect jacket for you.
First and foremost, it's essential to look for a jacket made of high-quality materials like leather or abrasion-resistant textile. These materials can provide good protection in the event of a crash, and are more likely to hold up over time. By general rule, 1.4mm thick leather cow-hide will give you the best protection in terms of abrasion. Next will be a textile material, kevlar is one of the better types of fabric for abrasion resistance.
It's also important to consider the weather conditions you'll be riding in. If you'll be riding in hot weather, look for a jacket with plenty of ventilation to help keep you cool. If you'll be riding in wet conditions, look for a jacket with a waterproof lining. Obviously leather is not a great option in wet conditions, is it might keep you fry for some time, eventually the water will soak through the leather, making it heavy and wet.
The type of motorcycle you have and the type of riding you'll be doing can also influence your jacket choice. For example, if you have a sport bike and do a lot of aggressive riding, you might want a more aerodynamic jacket with extra protection on the shoulders and elbows. Should you be riding a cruiser, you may want a more relaxed fit, however consider that if you do have a spill and end up sliding on the pavement; a jacket that isn’t snug will tend to ride up your back. Thus exposing your back to the abrasive nature of the pavement and more than likely causing you some road rash. I would strongly recommend that any riding jacket you choose to purchase contains, elbow pads, shoulder pads as well as some form of a back protector.
Make sure the jacket fits well and is comfortable to wear. It should be snug but not too tight, and allow for full range of motion. It's also a good idea to try on a few different jackets to find the one that feels the best.
Finally, consider your personal style and choose a jacket that reflects your personality. There are many different styles of motorcycle jackets available, from classic leather to modern, technical designs. Take the time to find a jacket that you love and feel good in. Make sure it is a jacket that enables other drivers to see you; I know a lot of people like the color black, however consider that when you are riding at night you will not be as visible to other road going users. If black is absolutely the color you must choose, than look around the jacket to make sure there are at least some reflective strips on it so that when they headlines shine on it, those strips will reflect the headlights.
Ultimately, the best motorcycle jacket for you will depend on your specific needs and preferences. By considering these factors, you can find a jacket that will keep you safe, comfortable, and stylish on the road.
